Research Interests

In the past, the study of the phylogenetics and systematics of waterfowl has been fraught with controversy due to conflicting and inconclusive morphological and molecular data. The goal of my Master’s thesis is to attempt to isolate various loci of the chicken repeat 1 (CR1) retrotransposable element within waterfowl, and use these loci to help shed light on the true story of the evolution of waterfowl. One of the best parts about using a relatively new approach to the study phylogenetics and systematics has been the problem solving and troubleshooting of the techniques involved. It is my ultimate goal to use the experience gained while working in the lab towards developing a career in a clinical environment.
